Tags are very useful as they help to group related posts together, and to quickly tell readers what a post is about. Tags also help people to find your content.
The main difference between tags and categories is that tags are more specific than categories and using tags is optional.
Tags are displayed differently on individual blog posts, blog pages, sidebars etc – it all depends on the theme and widgets you have activated. You are able to assign many tags per post.
Assigning Tags with the Post Tags Module:
Go to the “Post Tags” box to the bottom right of the post editor to assign or add new tags to your posts before you publish:
Click the Add button or the “Enter” button on your keyboard after typing each tag in order to add new tags one at a time. Alternatively you can add multiple tags at one time by separating them with a comma as you type them in.
Click the small X icon next to the tag in order to remove a tag from the post.
Click “Choose from the most popular tags” in order to choose some of your more commonly used tags and click the tags you want to assign to the post.
Assigning Tags via Your Dashboard:
Go to Posts -> Post Tags on your dashboard to add new tags and manage existing ones.
A list of your existing tags, a tag cloud, and a method of adding new tags will then appear.
A tag cloud shows your most popular tags. The more a tag is used, the larger that tag will appear. When shown together the tags give the appearance of a cloud.
To edit a tag simply click on that tag.
Adding a Tag:
You can add a new tag by filling out the fields:
Tag name– Desired name of your tag.
Description – Describes what the tag is for.
Click “Add tag“ to add.
Go to Posts -> Post Tags in your dashboard to see a list of tags you’ve used and their details (E.g. name and number of posts belonging to each tag). If you move your mouse over a tag a set of options will appear allowing you to edit, quick edit, or delete that tag:
Quick Edit allows you to quickly rename a tag.
If you click on Edit you will be able to edit the name and description. This functions exactly the same as in adding a tag.
Clicking on Delete will permanently delete that tag.
If you want to pick a lot of tags to delete, then you can select each tag that you want to delete using the checkbox to the left of the tag name.
If you want to select all tags, click the checkbox at the top.
Converting Tags to Categories:
If you decide that you would rather convert your tags to categories, you can do so by using the tag to category converter found at the bottom of the screen on the “Manage Tags” screen.
Clicking this will take you to a screen where you can select which tags to convert to categories. Make your selection, and then click on convert tags to categories. Your tags will be removed and categories will then be assigned to the posts that used to be in those tags.
